How to Meditate for Beginners: 15 Easy Steps

Are you new to meditation? Not sure where to start? Here are a few simple steps that will help you get on track the right way. Let’s guide you through the world of mediation by highlighting the most important aspects you need to focus on. 

Step 1. Find a safe and quiet place 

First, find a nice and quiet space where you can relax your mind and reach the moment of serenity. The ideal place for meditation is somewhere outdoors by a lake or river where you can sit under the tree like a Buddha. If this is something you don’t have access to, no worries. Try to find a calm place with no distraction.

Sit down on the floor and cross your legs. If this position is uncomfortable for some reason, you can just sit in the chair or on a couch. Make sure that you are wearing the most comfortable clothing possible.

Step 2. Let everything go.

Don’t be afraid that you are doing something wrong. Meditation needs practice and patience. The key to success would be to clear your mind and relax as much as you can. Don’t be overwhelmed with tension or negative thoughts. Let them go away. The main goal at this point is to detach yourself from absolutely all thoughts. 

Step 3. Learn how to focus your mind.

What if you can’t release tension? There is a sneaky tip that can help. Imagine that you have a shining little dot on the tip of your nose. Focus on this spot and try to think of nothing else but this dot for a few moments. This should help you to get rid of all the mind-wandering thoughts. Once you find yourself thinking about something other than this shining spot, just try to reset your mind, and focus on the spot again. Keep practicing and you’ll get to the point when this dot is the only thing matters. 

Step 4. Breathe and listen to the inner self.

Another key to successful meditation is breathing. Yes, that sounds a bit weird. You’ll probably think: everyone knows how to breathe, that sounds like nonsense! However, a proper breathing technique is extremely important. Try a deep and slow breath. On one – breathe in and relax. On two – breath out. Try to do this 10 times in a row. Then take a break and ask yourself: Am I relaxed? Is my mind calm and peaceful?

Step 5. Stay awake.

This step might be the most challenging, especially if you just started practicing meditation and never tried it before. At some point, you can simply feel sleepy or dizzy.  Don’t get confused or embarrassed, this is a common thing that happens to a rookie. You can always go back to step 3 and try to focus. 

Step 6. Remain positive. 

Please remember that meditation should be a fun process. Try to have fun on the go! After a while meditations will boost your energy and make you more self-confident.  If you stick to the plan and meditate on a daily basis it’ll soon become a habit that you will enjoy.

Step 7. Enjoy the process and remain curious.

The amount of effort you put in defines the amount of gains you end up with. Don’t be hard on yourself and stay curious while walking the path of meditation. Most of the world’s discoveries and remarkable events are the result of curiosity. Explore your possibilities and seek new information on meditation and you’ll never be bored. Don’t let it be just a routine. If you feel stressed, it’s okay to commit less time to meditation than you initially planned. 

Step 8. Turn to your inner world.

A lot of people start meditating not just for relaxation. Often, beginners are looking for ways to explore the inner world. It might sound strange, but most of us don’t take time to think about who we truly are. If you practice meditation long enough, you will discover many surprising things about your mind and spirit and find endless opportunities to become a better person.

Step 9. Be forgiving.

Meditation is also about learning how to forgive. Think of all the people and situations that have hurt your feelings. And let it go. The feelings of guilt and anger can create blocks in your mind causing tension in your body. Be forgiving, this will let your energy flow smoothly and remove all clogs and blockages in your aura.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. Admit your mistakes and own them. There is nothing wrong with being wrong. Forgive yourself.

Step 10. Trust yourself.

When you forgive yourself for all the mistakes made, start being more open and kind to the inner you. Talk to yourself as you’re your best friend. When you treat yourself with respect and love, things around start looking brighter. Listen to the inner voice, trust yourself, and own your decisions.

Step 11. Let your imagination flow.

Dream big and often. Unleash your imagination. Imagine you’re an ocean, so deep and powerful that nothing can obscure your thoughts. No matter what is lurking in your subconscious mind, you remain calm and focused. Feel the greater power within and be sure there is nothing you can’t do.

Step 12. Be a healer. 

Scan yourself for any negative thoughts that might arise during the process of meditation. It might be frustration, anxiety, guilt or anger. In your mind, burn it all down with a ray of bright and hot light that flows freely through your entire body. The goal is to reveal mental blocks and destroy them with pure energy. Get rid of all the things that prevent you from becoming a better you.

Step 13. Remain enthusiastic and smile.

After each meditation session, take a moment and embrace your happiness. Enjoy the feeling of complete calmness. Smile and try to retain this feeling for the rest of your day no matter what. Keep on a positive attitude and make sure that you feel rested, self-confident, stronger, and ready to face the upcoming challenges.
